Things We Learned Last Week

.

1. We, in Ireland, would NEVER survive an Ice Age. In the same way, we would never survive a heat wave either. So, unfortunately, we are destined to a destitute middle ground between slightly cold and slightly warm.

.

2. When the going gets tough, the tough (or those who think they’re tough) go to Malta. Isn’t that right, Minister Dempsey?

.

3. We have, as a collective group, all seen too many disaster movies. So, it’s a recession. So history shows that disaster and horror movies do particularly well in the recession. That doesn’t mean we have to believe them!

.

There was an almost apocalyptic style fear of the “big snowfall” we were expecting yesterday and today. People were watching the skies. How’s the crick in the neck doing today?

.

4. You know you’re inescapably Irish when you’re delighted to see rain falling from the sky. We got rain for probably 70% of the last year, so you would imagine that a bit of the solidified version would give us a break, and make every child in the country happy.

.

But when it came down to it, we all just wanted the rain back. Nice, honest, consistent rain…

.

Call me old fashioned, but I’d settle for the nice mild winters we used to get before people learned how to spell “environmental issues”.

.

I leave you with some classic celebratory music.
